Healthy Habits For A Bright, Confident Smile

A healthy mouth and a sparkling smile don’t just happen on their own, but are the product of maintaining great oral hygiene. At The Dental Care Center, we strive to make caring for your smile easy and maybe even a little fun! Our fabulous dentists recommend brushing at least twice a day and flossing once a day to keep your teeth and gums in great shape. Below, you’ll learn more about proper brushing and flossing, the importance of oral hygiene and even a few tips and tricks to make daily care a little more fun!

How To Brush

Brushing is simple, but should always be done with care! When areas are missed consistently, plaque can build up, gums may become irritated and cavities can form. Brushing should take about two minutes total and be done both in the morning and in the evening.

Step-By-Step Brushing Guide:

  • Using a soft-bristled toothbrush and a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste, brush each tooth with slow, gentle circular motions.
  • Be sure to clean along the gum line, the front, the tops and behind the teeth.
  • Rinse thoroughly with water and a fluoride mouthwash.

Songs To Brush To

Our team has found that there are tons of great songs to brush your teeth to—making daily oral hygiene a little more fun for kids and adults alike! Playing a two-minute song is a great way to make sure everyone brushes for the full recommended time.

Some of our favorites include:

  • “I Just Can’t Wait To Be King” — Disney’s The Lion King
  • “A Spoonful Of Sugar” — Mary Poppins
  • “Can’t Stop The Feeling!” — Justin Timberlake

How To Floss

Flossing is easy, essential for fresh breath and a key part of preventing cavities and gum disease. It reaches the areas that brushing alone does not—cleaning the crevices where food and plaque hide. By flossing daily, you’ll keep your gums healthy and your smile sparkling!

Step-By-Step Flossing Guide:

  • Take about eighteen inches of floss, wrapping most of it around one finger on each hand. Leave about two inches in between your fingers.
  • Slide the floss between your teeth using a back-and-forth motion to remove plaque and food particles. Be sure to use an unused, clean section of floss for each tooth.
  • Rinse with water or mouthwash after flossing to remove loosened particles.

Importance Of Establishing Effective Oral Hygiene Habits

Consistent, thorough oral hygiene is essential for a healthy mouth and overall wellness. By neglecting oral hygiene habits, you increase your risk for cavities, gum problems and chronic bad breath. Cavities can be painful, making it difficult to chew and causing general discomfort. Gum issues, such as inflammation or irritation, can progress to periodontal disease if left untreated, which is painful and irreversible.

By establishing strong, daily oral hygiene habits like brushing and flossing, you can keep your smile healthy and enjoy fresh breath and clean teeth for years to come!
